Over my years w ith
B e t t e r H o m e s a n d
G a r d e n s ,
I ’ve toured literally hundreds of
kitchens—and fallen in love w ith almost
every one. I completely admire the tiny
gems, microplanned so everything is in its
perfect place. I ’m crazy about the big,
multicook kitchens where everyone can
hang out. And I truly hope someday to have a
kitchen island w ith a refrigerator drawer
and guest seating. (Note to spouse:
t r u l y . )
Yet when I go home at night, I find myself
surprisingly happy w ith the kitchen I own.
It ’s a standard-issue galley space. But over
the years, we’ve touched up the aesthetics
and lighting, and organized storage to define
work zones. W e added art over the sink and
armchairs to the breakfast area, so the whole
space feels more like a fam ily room. And it
lives just right for us. W e make a lot of great
memories in that kitchen, not to mention
some pretty good meals.
This issue of
B e t t e r H o m

puts special focus on kitchens and right-now
ways to make yours a better place to eat, cook,
and live. You’ll see some beautiful new
kitchens w ith smart, stealable ideas, of
course. You’ll also find pro picks for big and
small products to make your kitchen more
functional or fun,

For now, many of us have postponed
bigger home projects. The upside of that is
we’re also taking a more creative, inspired
look at how to live better in the space we
have. And there’s no place better to start than
in the heart of the home.
